About five years ago I met two of the professional dancers from the hit television show “Dancing with the Stars,” the real-life married couple of Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts. Jonathan has partnered on the hit ABC show with model Rachel Hunter, newswoman Giselle Fernandes, McCartney’s ex Heather Mills, singer Marie Osmond, tennis star Monica Seles, pop singer Belinda Carlisle, and Grammy Award winning R&B and soul singer Macy Gray.
Anna has been paired with football great Jerry Rice, model Albert Reed, actor Steve Guttenberg, UFC fighter Chuck Liddell, U.S Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek, boxing champ Sugar Ray Leonard, and last year with Carson Kreesley. Both Anna and Jonathan were at Mineta San Jose International Airport in American Airline’s Admirals Club waiting for a flight. Anna wore no make-up, but still looked great in faded jeans and a casual top. As a dancer, she’s got a great figure. Jonathan looked exactly like he does on television, handsome and fit. Also, in person, he is as personable and nice as he is on television. After Jonathan introduced me to Anna, she said hello, but not much else. She seemed a bit shy. My five to ten minute conversation was mostly with Jonathan.
We spoke just a month before the announcement of Season 9’s dancers. Unfortunately, neither Jonathan or Anna were chosen on that season’s show. However, this year for Season 14 Anna is paired with Jack Wagner (pictured left) and Jonathan will have an opportunity to perform as a guest dancer. Jonathan told me about the required six months or so a professional dancer must dedicate to the show. He also hoped, if chosen to participate, that he would get an amateur partner with potential to make it farther along in the show. In Season 5, with Marie Osmond, he finished 3rd behind eventual winner race car drive Helio Castroneves and the Spice Girl’s Mel B.
For this year’s Season 14, the competition should be tight. I’ll be rooting for talk show host Maria Menounos paired with professional Derek Hough. Hough is a two time Dancing with the Stars champion having won with both Nicole Scherzinger and Brooke Burke. “Dancing With The Stars” airs Monday and Tuesday nights on ABC.
